I'm reporting from the hotel business center at 1:15 a.m.- we leave tomorrow at noon and I'm too excited to sleep! A couple of us keyed up teachers hung out in the jacuzzi a while after dinner, which was extremely relaxing, but I'm still not ready for bed.

Today was full of interesting discussion on India's economy, politics, and colonial history. There were many questions among the Fulbrighters on the caste system in India, namely concerning whether people in the lowest castes have the opportunity to better their lot by pursuing more distinguished career paths.  I was fascinated when the lecturer, a professor from India, attempted to explain the caste system by drawing a parallel with racism in America- I could hear 16 American teachers suck air through their teeth simultaneoulsy, and predictably one woman called out, "but we have a Black President!" At this point we had already diverged from the topic of India's economy and had to get back on track, but our collective gut reaction got me thinking. I've been teaching in DC for 5 years in schools that are in practice almost entirely segregated, but Barack lives 4 blocks from where I work. I hope this discussion comes up again among the teachers...

We arrive in India at 12:35 a.m. (Delhi time) on the 3rd. I'll write again whenever I get the opportunity Friday. So far I have received some very encouraging comments from friends and family- keep them coming! I feel so loved and blessed as I set off on this adventure. Thanks and stay posted!
