Where I stayed
We arrived in Ridgecrest about 6pm, pulling into the Motel 6 car park to see the entire car park was filled with either pickups or 4WDs, interesting. Turns out Ridgecrest is home to a lot of labourers who are there temporarily, working on construction projects etc.
There was a distinct vibe of the sort of 5 dollar motels you see in old road movies where there's a drug deal going on in one room, whilst a hooker is being murdered in the other. I wouldn't say it was intimidating but it was obvious that people knew we weren't locals (or even Americans), which meant a lot of staring.
We decided to go and get stocked up with food at the local Wal-Mart, now because Wal-Mart own Asda in the UK we thought this one would be similar to our local Asda, wrong! It's true, you can buy pretty much whatever you want at a Wal-Mart but the food section on this one was tiny so we just got plenty of bread and sandwich fillings, water, sodas and snacks that we could eat whilst we went through Death Valley the next day. That Wal-Mart was a strange place, I couldn't shake the feeling that everyone there seemed to be crying inside.
We got back to the Motel 6, dumped our supplies and went for a drive around the town. We got back an hour later to find most if not all of Ridgecrest's Police force parked up in the car park and running at one of the rooms. We decided to get in our room n keep our heads down for the night, luckily the TV had the Adult Swim channel so we just watched cartoons like Family Guy, American Dad, Robot Chicked, Metalocalypse all night whilst we made sandwiches for the next day, and all was good with the world.
