After stopping at the Ranger Station/Park Shop to buy our permits we headed into the park.
The Rangers were really friendly and happy to find obscure places on maps for us so we could head there later in the day. I was especially impressed they helped us find Sky Valley as we were then able to find the road sign from the Kyuss album of the same name.

First up was a stop to just look at the scenery, vast tracts of desert and rocks stretching out before our eyes, it was immense and I'd not sen anything like it since living in the Persian Gulf as a kid.

Next we stopped at Hidden Valley, a place smugglers, cattle thieves and outlaws used to hide out when being chased.

We rolled on some more and stopped for lunch before pulling up at Skull Rock trailhead and making the 1.5 mile round trip to Skull Rock - N.B. If you can't be bothered with the walk, drive a bit further down the road and you'll get to a lay-by right next to the rock itself.

After that was a drive around and up the mountain looking out over the Coachella Valley to Mexico, followed by a long drive out of the park.
