Where I stayed
Motel 6, Tenderloin
Arrived in the airport only to be heavily questioned by very inquisitive immigration officials, I'm guessing they thought I might be Osama due to the size of my beard at the time ;-)
After persuading them I was all good we hopped on the BART line and rode to central SF, all the while being amused by the driver who did all his announcements in a comedy game show host voice.
Found our way to the Motel 6 in the Tenderloin and immediately realised why various guidebooks had said to avoid the Tenderloin. The Motel itself was nice enough, but there were folks obviously selling drugs on most of the corners when we got there. Still though, a bit of common sense and general awareness meant we managed not to look too much like tourists when we were wandering about.
The main plan for the night once we'd got some dinner down us was to go and see Big Black down at the Bottom of the Hill Bar (which it turned out was a 2 mile march across town, damn).
Big Black were awesome and the venue was a cool little place as well, packed with nice locals.
Wandering home about 1AM we found a deli that was still open and I got THE biggest tuna sandwich I've seen in my life.
