Where I stayed
Aboard the train we were again transported to another time and place, medieval Umbria: Perugia, Assisi and Spello. Perugia's center, seemingly unchanged for centuries, reignited my childhood fantasies of knighthood. Alas the knights have long past, fortunately their chivalry though, adopted by the local drunkards loitering and fraternizing around Piazza IV Novermbre.
Using Perugia as a base we ventured off to the medieval towns of Assisi and Spello. Assisi, once home to St. Francis, is blessed with many ornate churches, most notably the Basilica Di San Francesco, attracting throngs of tourists and pilgrims alike. Wishing to follow in the footsteps of St. Francis, pops and I took to the countryside, hiking 8 kms from the quaint town of Spello back to Assisi.
