Rebecca got a 10,000 payrise and so now is bringing in the massive salary of 250,000 yen a month! Well, that is the equiv of about $37,000 Australian (per ANNUM) once you take tax into account - and I earned about $70 last month, helping a Russian girl with a scholarship application and doing a presentation on Latin America. So we celebrated our new affluence by using 6 dried up little fish in the miso instead of the usual four.

We were planning to hitch hike to some nearby mountains this weekend but there was a festival going on in the nearby town of Narai, and as we always seem to get to the local Matsumoto festivals about 4pm as everyone is shutting up for the day we decided to head out to Narai and at least get to see ONE festival in Japan. As we had blown our budget on the extra fishy miso and couldn't afford the train, we had to cycle the 70km round trip. My bike is a circa 1985 steel frame 20kg mountain bike with buckled wheels and some good front brakes (won't mention the back ones), so I was telling myself it would be a good training ride.

After the parade was over Rebecca started chatting to this old guy on his front door step and before I knew it we were sitting on the tatami mat in his lounge room with his blind drunk cousin who kept out glasses charged with whiskey and sake for the next 90 minutes. There was a huge table full of food to be eaten too! R's Japanese is OK, but mine is non-existant so next thing another guy is being dragged in off the street to help translate for us. There we were getting a little hazing on all
the booze, thinking about our 2 hour ride home and on the other side of the table was a little Japanese Yoda and the Japanese Burt Reynolds - all a bit surreal. After promising to return in August for their next festival we weaved off on the long downhill home.

And what did we spy 1/2 way home? A field of asparagus ready for the picking!! Do you think I could hold Rebecca back? Anyway, the bourgeois capitalist pig operators had already harvested the crop, but there was plenty of scattered regrowth for us to fill our backpack with. Ahhhh another fabulous weekend in Japan!
