We have finally finished our horrid stint in Central Queensland working at the Union Hotel Motel. We had one final day in the Outback at Sharon and Steve's beautiful homestead on their cattle ranch. I got to ride their dirt bike around and we took an extensive tour of the range and learned a lot about cattle rearing. It was a wonderful evening with talk and wine BBQ and before bed I played with a baby bugie and we all watched the last 1/3 of Monsters INC. Such a wonderful movie.
In the early morning we said our farewells to our hosts as well as Yolanda and Micheal who had accompanied us out there, and drove off. All the way up to Mackay.
Mackay is a small coastal city that is very industrial but pretty. It reminds me of Everett a lot. A working city with little to do in it but drive your expensive sports cars, but with some tremendous mountains just inland.
It was in these hill, as I should call them, we spend yesterday. A wonderful Rainforest full of giant gid trees and palms. The Eungella National Park in quite amazing. We drove for over an hour up a winding flatlands road, flanked by "mountains" until all of a sudden the road hit the back wall and just started snaking right up it. We took it slow. A steep road full of hairpins and blind curves with negligible guard rails. We we reached the top we look back and gasped. It was like looking down the barrel of a glacier-gun. It probably was at some point. A flat valley with the meandering Cattle Creek and road likewise, framed by immense hills of gorgeous trees.
The Rainforest was of course epic. Everything was huge and alive. I was a little wary of snakes but we didn't even see one the whole time and we hiked 14km or so.
Back in the green part of the country with fresh air and little to no dust plugging my sinuses, my knee no longer swollen and uncomfortable, and back surfing the couches of cool people who have more to say than non-sequitors about cattle. Life is good.
We are heading up to Townsville later today to accompany some people sailing their Catamaran from their down to Airlie beach, via the Whitsunday Islands. Should take about 4 days. It's gonna be great.
More to come soon (now that I have stuff to write about)
