Gyeongju was the most beautiful place we saw in Korea. It is the ancient capital of the Shilla Dynasty (~900-1200 AD) and lies in a large valley filled with rice paddies, surrounded by green, forested mountains. We rented bikes and rode around the town, admiring the traditional wooden houses with ceramic roofs and the pyramid-like grassy tombs which were dotted around the lush countryside.
