.Antigua is the main tourist hub of guatemala and is a nice old town with lots of colourful buildings and cobbled streets...just like every other colonial town everywhere. Full of tourists, full of spanish students, really expensive and there was nothing to do. Quite fun at night though. The only thing really worth seeing in Antigua is actually outside of town and is Volcan Pacaya, one of the most active in central america. It was an easy climb up the side of it (the crater is too dangerous to visit so we only went half way up) but we got to within 1m of a lava flow which was amazing to see. Unbelievably hot and you could see the rocks glowing red deep beneath you which was a bit disconcerting. Even more so for a few unlucky people whose shoes completely melted and you could see their feet through the toes. As we waited to go back there was a line of sullen people with cuts and bruises and melted footwear trudging past, obviously not seeing the funny side of how utterly unsafe being there was.
