Anyway, the city is really cool. Itīs very big but the centre is quite small so you can wander around and see everything. Itīs also towered over by an enormous volcano and several large mountains so itīs a fairly impressive setting. It is also my first time at any sort of altitude in Peru (2400m) so iīm edging on the Andes at the moment. I really just wandered about for a couple of days going to a museum here and a monastery there and the odd cathedral and a hundred different camera shops to try and buy a new camera after sandboarding ruined my last. Itīs just another city really so nothing enormously exciting went on.
Half of the reason that I did come here was to use it as a jumping off point to visit a nearby canyon which is one of the deepest in the world. But thatīs another story.
I entered Peruīs second largest city amidst a blaze of pan-pipe music which had been blaring the entire night on my bus from Ica. To make it worse it was also on loop and it can really drive you insane. They love all that pan-pipe stuff down here - I was sitting outside on a street having lunch the other day when this group of 4 normal looking locals popped on some traditional clothing and busted out the mini guitars and several different sorts of pipes and went to work putting me off my food trying to sell cds.
