Its quite a relief to leave Lima. It has its own charm but it really does smell and its very noisy. Anyway, the first stop on the more adventurous part of my journey was a small oasis in the middle of the Ica desert (northern part of the Atacama) called Huacachina. Its a really tranquil place...until the huge dune buggies motor up to scare the hell out of all the tourists. Of course I couldnt resist and tried one of these myself. Theyre basically oversized quad bikes with roll cages and they zoom around the dunes and go up and down and over and sideways over these huge 100ft dunes and its amazingly terrifying. Its like the most exciting rollercoaster youve ever been on, but much more dangerous making it ten times more scary. Now that ive survived it I can say it was great fun of course. It was also an amazing way to see the desert surrounding Ica (main provincial town) and the enormous Sahara-esque dunes are spectacular. We also did sandboarding while on the buggy which saved us having to walk back up. Pretty good fun although much harder than it looks. Having been skiing lots, I was relying on skiing being similar to snowboarding and snowboarding being similar to sandboarding...bit of a long shot. Anyway, the only casualty was my camera which died due to sand particles which is a bit annoying. Im off to another large city next so hopefully ill be able to fix/replace it there. It was probably worth it to take the photos though (if you want to start paying to see these then that would fund my new camera very nicely!). Until next time.
