This overnighter on the bus from Airlie to Cairns is even tougher than the previous one. In my rush to get a good seat, and perhaps still overwhelmed by my birthday buddy, I forget to take my fleece and a long-sleeved shirt out of my backpack. As a result, I have no makeshift pillow and my bare arms are exposed to the relentlessly icy air-conditioning. Secondly, the VCR on the bus is broken, so no entertainment. The 'meal break' is from 11 to 11:30pm, which wakes up anyone who tries to sleep, then the drivers change over at about 3am and noisily exchange bus driver-type information and jokes, again waking everyone up. By the time we get to Cairns, at 6am and a full day ahead of us, we're knackered.

Making the best of things, we find this nice outdoor lagoon/pool where we spend a couple of hours swimming and organising our packs. Somehow the day drifts by until we catch our plane down to Sydney, and then the Sydney to Tokyo flight. Geographically, it would have made more sense to fly from Cairns to Tokyo but, for some reason, our travel agent sent us this way. The flight attendant announces that the in-flight entertainment system is on the blink. He goes on to say that they were going to give everyone $30 gift certificates from some bookshop as compensation but that it was too late by the time they would have gotten around to it.

The flight is probably 80 percent Japanese, making us realise that we are beginning a new and very different phase of our journey.

I know it's a few years too late, but found your blog of your trip of the East Coast very informative as I'm doing the same later in the year, though from north to south.
Good one!
