Welcome to our Travelogue. This is where we will try to put updates, photos and videos from our trip as time and technical access allows. Now that the journey is in motion and the countdown is over, I thought it would make more sense to have all the pre-trip ramblings in one place. So I have collated them all and added them in the next entry.

Who we are

By way of introduction, we (Jim and Jane) are a couple in our late 20s who have decided to up and leave the comfort of our jobs and house for a year and explore as much of the world as we can.

Jim (AKA James, Jamie) spent most of his life in New Zealand but has lived in Toronto, Canada since May, 2000. He has travelled a reasonable amount, including Southeast Asia, Europe and the US.

Jane was born in Czechoslovakia (the Slovak part) and moved to England when she was 19, without being able to speak a word of English. She too moved to Canada in 2000, where we met each other. We fell in love, got married in 2005 and are well on the way to living happily ever after.

The plan

A map of our itinerary

We have about 23 countries on our itinerary, which will take us from our current base in Toronto to New Zealand (to see Jim's family) and Australia, up to Japan, Thailand and India to Nepal. In Nepal, we are going to volunteer as teachers in a small village for a couple of months.

After that, we have a somewhat circuitous series of plane rides to Tanzania via England, and we will volunteer for another couple of months there. Afterwards we hope to take in a safari and have a crack at Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Then it's up to Egypt, through the Middle East and Southern Europe to visit Jane's family in Slovakia, down to France and Spain and across to Morocco.

The final stage is back up through Spain and France to England and then back to Toronto, exactly one year to the day that we left.

About half of our budget has been earmarked for pre-trip expenses (flights, insurance, volunteer placements, visas, vaccinations, clothes, railpasses, etc) and the other half for day-to-day living expenses.

We hope you enjoy following the journey from wherever you are. I'll put updates on whenever possible, but this may be tricky in some parts of the world that don't have much in the way of Internet access.
