We have now arrived in the amazon!! After a longish trip (saving money again), from Santa Marta by air to leticia, a small town at the south of Columbia near the borders for brazil and Peru. Overnight there, then crossed the border to tabatinga, then a flight to manuas, brazil!

We were met by our tour company, amazon gero tours, and our two travel companions for our jungle trip, a mother and daughter from America.

We also did a tour of the teatro amazonas, the theatre which was absolutely beautiful.

The ceilings are really ornate, with either beautifully painted murals. The timber floors in one room on the second floor was made of many differant types of timber and all laid with no nails, just cut to size. As such we had to wear special slippers.

They still hold plays, ballet etc in the theatre most nights. The main theatre has most of the original chairs (although reupholstered) and the ceiling paintings are magnificent.

That night we went out for dinner to an awesome BBQ place, we were the only gringos and the entire menu was in Portuguese (and we hadn't got our phrase book yet) so after awhile we thought we would just order anything but then the manager came over and spoke to us in English and looked after us all night, ordered some delicious meals for us and made me some mean caiprinhas. Caiprinhas are a Brazilian cocktail, made from lime muddled with sugar and then filled with cachaca, a 43% alcohol made from canesugar. They are incredibly strong, and incredibly tasty and easy to drink - a deadly combination (and a deadly hangover!!) a great night, and our first taste of how amazing brazil is, the food, the drink and mostly the people!
