Where I stayed
Isla de pirata is one of the 30 mostly privately owned islands which make up Islas de rosario. It is around 45km out of Cartagena in the Caribbean sea. Isla de pirata is split into 3 unequal parts, the largest run as a resort and the two others owned privately.
We set off from the marina in the morning for isla de pirata, taking around 45 mins by fast boat. We arrived with other guests who were just coming to the island for the day.
On arrival we then headed out to snorkel around some of the islands, seeing lots of coral and brightly coloured marine life
After snorkeling we went off to another island to an aquarium. They had a dolphin and shark show, and we saw heaps of other animals, lots of different types of sharks, turtles, fish, sting rays etc.
After lunch we enjoyed some relaxing time, sun baking and soaking up the sun. The weather is amazing here!! Our villa was amazing on the second level, we could see straight out to the ocean and from our doorstep it was a few steps into the sea.
The day trip people left and there was around 10 of us staying on the island! Was blissful, you felt like you were on your own secluded island. We watched the sunset and enjoyed a beautiful dinner and drinks.
The following day we spent swimming and sun baking before heading back to Cartagena in the late afternoon. Was definitely worth splurging on, was absolutely beautiful ( we're both not sure how we will top this years anniversary spent on a small island in the Caribbean sea!!)
Time to say goodbye to Cartagena, a short 4 hour bus trip to Santa Marta.
