We woke up bright and early at 3am, quickly packed up and headed to the check point to get through to the hike to sun gate. The checkpoint doesn't open until 5.30am but if you are one of the first groups through you can get better pictures as there as less people at the sun gate.

We arrived at checkpoint, second group in line, woo hoo! So we spent 2 hrs in line, dancing and joking around to keep warm and to warm up our tired muscles.

Finally we were let through, it was a 2 hour hike, climbing up lots of stone stairs to reach the sun gate, the first place you can see machu picchu. You must walk as a group, otherwise it leaves you open to be overtaken by other groups.

We ended up overtaking the first group, so we were the first full group to make it to sun gate!

What an incredible moment, all our hard work had paid off, a feeling of elation when you see the sun come up over the mountain and onto machu picchu.

We were incredibly lucky with the weather for the whole trek, very clear sunny days. A lot of the time, it is cloudy and sometimes people make it to the sun gate and don't get to see machu picchu through the clouds.

We then proceeded into our decent into machu picchu. The tourist buses had started to arrive, some walking up to sun gate to take pictures. It was a proud feeling to know that we had worked so hard to get there and not just taken the bus.

Machu picchu means old mountain, be careful when pronouncing machu picchu, it must be pronounced, 'pic-chu' if you say picchu, it means old penis!!!

What an experience, one we will never forgot, but not one we will do again in a hurry!!
