Siapco introductions...
Dan and his wife Wendy are truly an amazing couple. They really are the total missionary ophthalmology package. Dan is an ophthalmologist from Washington and Wendy, his wife, happens to be the director of the ambulatory surgery center and his surgical scrub back home. They have been on numerous trips--Uganda, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, just to name a few. Dan is an unassuming guy. If you met him on the street, the first thought would be surfer not surgeon. His laid back demeanor, spiked dark hair and flip flops disguise his exquisite skill beneath the microscope. Wendy is an unassuming, gentle person with soft voice and bright white smile. Beneath this warm exterior is an extremely organized, well-prepared, fully capable OR assistant. The two of them work seamlessly together with a fluid efficiency and expertise that truly astounds. To say they were great teachers is an understatement. Dan focused on teaching me MSICS, giving great pointers and wise council to bail me out of tough surgical situations. Wendy shared her wealth of knowledge with Sharon and Page, recounting lessons learned on previous trips. We truly enjoyed their companionship on this trip and I think we make a wonderful team together in the 2 operating rooms we shared this week.
We owe them both a great deal of gratitude and I trust that their gift of teaching will broaden their mission by giving us the tools to go forth in the future and share what we have learned with others.
