Where I stayed
Bacharach, Germany
Bacharach is a lovely little town submerged in German arcetechure. The cobblestoned streets and flower lined shops provide a quiet retreat for tourists. After mapping out where we were we hiked up a dirt trail for about a mile, including 500 steps to reach our 12 century castle. Note, if you are thinking of staying in or around a castle, you will very much likely be hiking up a huge hill or mountain! It would have been incredibly steep without our backpacks, and aching feel, but the view and the castle itself was stunning. Since we arrived early after our magical experience of St. Goar, we spent a full day walking around town and up through the hills of vineyards and medieval watch towers. Walking around the town we ran into our friends from the Rick Steve tour St. Goar! And although on another interesting tour, we simply said hello, but went along ahead of them with the book, since we hadn't pay for the tour.
The castle filled up with German elementary school children on an overnight field trip, who played around at night. In the castle we ended up rooming with a couple from the Eastern side of the US, and three gentlemen whose language we couldn't place. We chatted with the Americans a bit, and managed our first load of laundry that night. Exhausted we rubbed each others feets, drank hot chocolate and went to bed. Tomorrow we catch the early train to Rothenberg, Germany.
