200 kilometers after leaving the A.C.T. we drove into the Blue Mountains amid growing rugged beauty. Katoomba the main jewel in crown of the mountains, was to be our base and upon first arriving we immediately drove to one of the lookouts. Our initial sitting of the surrounding area took our breathes away and filled us with real enthusiasm. We decided to head down the cliff face path and we kept going further and further down amazed by the landscape, crossing waterfalls and caverns. With the lush canopy growing closer and the sun starting to set we started the painful accent back up to the top.

Because it was fairly cold in the mountains at night we decided to check into our first hostel of the trip. The place was fine enough if not a little boring. However it did give us ample time plan the next few days of hiking having been inspired by the days introduction to the area. Over the next couple of days we well and truly managed to cover most of the hikes in the area and they always seemed to impress. For me I was impressed with the contrasts. Starting on the rocky cliff tops and slowly venturing deeper into the lush, river carved bushland. The orange cliff face, dark green bush and deep blue sky only served to accentuate each other.

Our last real point of interest was the lookout over looking the famous rock formation of the three sisters. We had previously actually hiked right up to the stacks and then winded down the base of them, but this was where the classic postcard snapshot was to be had. The lookout was crowed with hundreds of tour bus visitors and was quite chaotic at times.

Once we had well and truly had our fill of the Katoomba and Blackheath area we headed down into the Megalong Valley and inside the Blue Mountains Gorge for another unique vantage point. After snaking our way back out of the gorge we continued on the horseshoe drive camping overnight in Lithgow and continuing the remainder of the drive out of the mountains the next day.
