So this morning we switched guest houses and now we hope the place we're at will make it easier to meet people because they actually have a large lobby and they serve food so there is somewhere to sit down and chat.
The plan today was to rent a scooter bike and go up a small mountain outside of town to see the supposedly best temple around Chiang Mai (we've been told many times that you haven't visited Chiang Mai until you've been to Doi Suthep, the temple). But becuase it's the kings birthday we were told it would probably be way too busy and that we should go another day. So instead we decided we would rent bicycles and ride to the far side of town to see the silk factory and other handicrafts being made.
We got all the way to the edge of town when we realize we had forgotten where we were actually heading to (it was really hot) and we had far passed our turn. So we decided to take advantage of how far we had come and followed some signs to a temple. We met a very friendly monk there who spoke great english and told us we could wander all around. We didn't go into any of the temples though because one had a bunch of monks in it and the other had closed doors and the monk told us we couldn't take our camera in and possibly that we weren't actually suppose to go in either, we weren't sure so we just stayed out.
Then we headed back and found the road on the map that we THOUGHT we were looking for, we were wrong again! Turns out the market was on the very opposite side of town about 10kms away, grrr. A guy had pointed out an enlargement of the area on our map and then a circled area on the main map and we had thought they were the same place, nope. After looking for a bit we found a small arrow in the corner of our map on the opposite side that said "to silk factory"...we're still learning guess!
We gave up on it and rode our bikes all the way back to the guest house and went for a dip in the pool, had a nap, and headed out for the sunday night market. It was the same thing as the saturday night market but still cool to wander around in. We met a couple from B.C, who just happened to have went to the silk factory and that area today and told us how great it was....bummer.
There was a big stage with dancing and fireworks and a candle ceremony at one of the old square's gates...which we enjoyed from the balcony of Starbucks while sipping on frappacccino's (how horrible is that? haha, really though it was just a place to sit and get a hightened view!).
Well that's basically been our day. Nothing too exciting in the past few days but tomorrow we have a tour to Chiang Rai planned, and we are so ready to actually do something besides wander!
