Flag of Brazil  , São Paulo,
Monday, July 8, 2013

And so we are now in the final country in our travels. After an expensive and slightly uncomfortable bus ride, we arrived in Sao Paulo. We ended up spending a week in São Paulo even though there isn't actually that much to do there. It's a decent city but nothing special.

We spent our time relaxing in the hostel, exploring some parts of the city, went to the zoo etc. We tried to work on a minimum budget (as we've heard that Rio can be expensive and so we want to have enough funds to enjoy our last week away) which involved cooking ourselves dinner on most nights. Unfortunately the ingredients we got from the local supermarket were more than dubious and as such our meals were somewhat underwhelming, to put it nicely. The steak we used to make steak sandwiches was like chewing rubber.

Communicating is very hard as we know one word in Portuguese - obregado - thank you. We managed to get by in Panama, Chile and Argentina; but in Brazil we are struggling. Thankfully, it seems, in the touristy areas English is spoken more widely then in the Spanish speaking countries. It's still not common though.

After a week in São Paulo we'd had enough of walking around the city and lounging at the hostel, playing X-box with some of the Brazilian staff, so we've headed on towards the coast - to a town called Paraty. The weather in São Paulo was really hot and sunny (apart from the first day when we got drenched walking 200m from the metro station to the hostel), but unfortunately our first day in Paraty was met with grey clouds and drizzling rain, which is not what you want when the primary activities are water sports. Oh well.

Much love

Little D on

You could be doing water sports over here in a heat wave!! You should have learnt Portuguese whilst working in the Polish chocolate factory!!
Looking forward to your return. Did you manage to watch the Murray match anywhere?
Stay Safe xx

It's been exciting reading your blogs but more exciting that you are on the last legs and home shortly. Remind me to buy you a decent steak.
