Thursday 12 April 2012 (Day 19 in Tasmania … 6 days to go here!)
Spent the morning in Sheffield. Our first stop was a Marbles shop. Very special glass marbles … hand blown and very beautiful … very clever what can be made – marbles with little fish in them or the solar system or just shiny and beautiful colours – ranging in price from 20cents (for kids bulk made ones) to hundreds of dollars (for the piece of art! While there the shop assistant told about the Sheffield-Kingaroy connection … a scone shop/cafe down the road where Sir Joh was very friendly with the previous owner and Lady Flo had visited on a couple of occasions. Of course we had to visit and have morning tea there – what else but warm Pumpkin scones with jam and cream!!
We also spend time looking at the murals being painted. Sheffield is known here as "Town of Murals" since the inception of the Mural Project in 1985. This project is credited with bringing the town back to life. Every Easter a mural fest attracts thousands of spectators from across Australia for a week long competition to paint the best mural inspired by a specific poem. The murals stay up in the park for 12 months. We just happened to be there this week when the murals were being painted – they are to be judged on Saturday! … and for a gold coin donation we got to vote for the people's choice!!! Very interesting.
We then travelled to Marakoopa Caves (near Mole Creek) in the Mole Creek Karst National Park.
