Whenever a European Tour book doesnt mention Serbia, Bosnia, Albania and macedonia you need to be slightly suspicious but after talking to a few people i decided to venture to that part of the world.
Apparently Belgrade was the best of the Balkans before the wars and its up and coming again. Bombs have been dropped as recently as 1999 in the Belgrade. ..... pretty mind-boggling stuff. i had a met a Serbian on the train ride from Romania to Serbia and he gave me a solid 1/2 hour history lesson on his country and the surrounding ones. i love the people the people that I have met on the trains. Often my highlight.
i have to tell you about my last night in Romania.
I had bought my train ticket for Croatia and that left at 5:50 am. i decided to go out to a club which didnt really have people until 1am. The people that I was with had reserved a table and bought 100 dollar bottle of vodka. To me that sounds like a lot of money. This club that we went to was incredilble. I felt like I was back in Vegas with my brother Jerad. FRom the club I called a taxi driver that i met the night before that spoke perfect Spanish and came and picked me up taking me back to where i was staying. By this time its 5am and I just have the same taxi driver take me straight to the train statin (Im still buzzing from the night).
i catch that train , which i slept the first 3 hours and apparently border control could not wake me . A fellow passenger told me the story later that i handed my ticket to him and then I finally realized to hand him my passport. i dont remember everything so clearly but the Serbian passenger found it fairly amussing.
