Some tips:
Book your national park lodging EARLY !!!! They begin booking for the summer in May of the year before.
Flying into Jackson Hole is more expensive than flying into Salt Lake City or Denver but the airport location is spectacular. You are in GTNP when you land. This is the only commercial airport located in a national park.
Pack a cooler with lunch fixings, plenty of water and snacks so you can eat when you are hungry and you won't have to find a restaurant. We enjoyed many tailgate picnics from our cooler.
Pack for all kinds of weather!!! We kept a duffel bag in the trunk with heavy jackets, gloves, shorts, bathing suits and towels.
If you want close up photos of wildlife, make sure you have a powerful zoom lens. Our camera was very inadequate. We have many pictures of wildlife that are just not close enough.
Talk to the rangers and employees. They are so friendly and it was nice to hear about their experience working in the park.
Take back roads such as Firehole Canyon Dr (YNP), Blacktail Plateau Dr (YNP), Signal Mt Road (GTNP) and Jenny Lake Scenic Dr (GTNP). It is a great chance to get away from the main road.
Stay in at least two lodging areas in Yellowstone so you won't have to backtrack so much but don't worry about a bit of backtracking. We stayed in too many places. Driving is great here because you never know what you may see. So just drive and have fun!!!
Get out of the car and do some hikes.
Final thought: If you have not already been to this part of the country, just go!!!! It was such a blessing to see a part of God's creation left relatively untouched. We will enjoy unbelievable memories of this trip for a lifetime.
