This orphanage was set up in the name of Jodie O'Shea who died in the Bali bombings. It is now home to 51 children, some of whom come from Sumba a small island in east Bali. The island is arid and very poor, the children are malnourished, these children generally have a parent who loves them but is just not able to provide them with healthy meals, education and the opportunity to just be a kid. If possible the children return home in the school holidays. If there isn't a family member to go to, the orphanage takes them on a holiday, this time they are all off to Sinaraja.
If you don't have time to volunteer, email Alison and arrange to pop in for awhile, the kids will be running around but they will appreciate it, just to see something good has come from something so terrible. We were going between Ubud and Legian when we stopped by as we had run out of time, but it was something I wanted to do.
One of the boys who was so shy last time, but loved showing my nephews stuff on the computer is now ready for work as he is almost finished at uni doing IT. Something he could never of dreamed of without the orphanages support.
When we got there they had recently taken in two young children who have lost both their parents in an extremely awful way, they will now receive the support they need to get through the grieving process. We wish them well for their futures.
If you would like to contact the orphanage there website is:
It is a difficult place to find so make sure you have a good driver or remember to take the phone number so they can call for directions.
