As a student of literature, I was thrilled to visit the replicated Shakespeare's Globe Theater.  Excavations of old London have lead to the discovery of the actual globe theater beneath another building, and since that building could not be demolished for further searches, Sam Wanamaker decided to reconstruct the theater in Southwark, London.

Admission to the Globe includes an exhibition and a guided tour of the theater.  We were lucky to have an elegant and chic tour guide instruct us about the traditions of theater going in Shakespeare's day.  We learned of the seating arrangements, with upper classes seated in the balconies and the lower classes packed in like sardines in the standing room area surrounding the stage.  While visiting, a drama group was rehearsing a traditional jig, which concluded all of the plays presented in the theater during the age of Shakespeare, and this served the purpose of uplifting the audience after the often cathartic experiences of viewing a tragedy.

Our tour guide informed us that the Globe Theater would have been constructed with inexpensive materials, but it would have been ornamented in a way to appear high class.  This follows the traditions of the theater, I would say, as costumery rarely replicates life.
