So my first full day in Bangkok. I woke up early, surprisingly, around 7am, local time.  My neighbor was also up, so we started talking, and finally decided that since it was both of our first times in Bangkok, we would explore the city together. This worked great for me, since that's half the reason I stay in dormitories instead of single rooms: to meet people.  The hostel provided a map of Bangkok, and looking at it we decided to go to the Grand Palace and Wat Pho (the reclining Buddha). We also decided it would be a fairly simple thing to just walk there.  Wrong.  It took us a good hour and a half to get there, possibly more. And my poor feet had forgotten what it was like to wear flip flops, so I now have quite a few blisters.  But that's what the box of band-aids I brought along are for.

We did have a good time finding our way around the city, though. We stopped at an open air restaurant for breakfast, and enjoyed duck, rice, and beer (I didn't order beer as it was only 10am, but as it turns out, their 'bottle of beer' is 1L, so I got a glass and helped him finish it. The answer is 10 Baht, btw).  We walked through Chinatown and finally found our way to Wat Pho. And it's true, every tuk-tuk driver we passed asked us where we were going, told us it was closed today for a special ceremony, and scribbled all over our map telling us where to go. "And special price today, only 20 Baht! I take you!" Good thing we each had a map, because by the time we got there, there were so many scribbles on the first map that we couldn't even read the street names!

It was 31 degrees in Bangkok today, and silly us we kept on exploring the city even in midday. But I drank tons of water, and we tried to stay in the shade as much as possible.  Plus, I'd managed to find a  bottle of sunscreen that was small enough for me to bring on the plane, so hopefully I won't wake up with a sunburn tomorrow.  I definitely showered 3 times today, though.

And one last piece of exciting news: the other woman who is staying in the same room as me is actually a travel guide (her family lives in the outskirts of Bangkok, but it's easier for her to stay in hostels close to her clients), so we had an awesome chat and she suggested a bunch of things for me to do tomorrow.  And showed me how to get there.

But even though it's only 8ish here, and I wanted to check out the night market, I'm leaving that for tomorrow.  I am way too tired today, and I want to be well rested for another day of exploration tomorrow.

Oh yes, and so far I've found 3 McDonalds, 1 Dairy Queen, 1 KFC, and 2 Starbucks.
