Two lane roads in Guatemala arent what they seem. Our minivan driver showed us this the hard way playing chicken with semis in his battered mobile. Its helpful that they use metric measurements as inches from death doesnt do the near-misses justice!
We arrived at Lago de Atitlan, around two hours from Antigua, and boated straight for Santa Cruz la Laguna. Our electricity free treehouse where we stayed was perfect in every way but one...scaling a ladder every half hour to the communal toilet to satisfy Woody´s bowel blow-outs from the dodgy dinner proved his heroism in times of trouble.
Next morning, with gentle tummies we hiked to the hillside retreat Casa Del Mundo with a woodfired hot tub overlooking the lake.
After all liquid was exorcised from Woody, we moved on to find our inner child in San Marcos. It wasn´t there so we moved on.
The next tiny town along the lake, San Pedro, was a pothead paradise complete with trash in streets and armless peddlers pushing their pathetic wares.
Leaving the lake behind us we decided to head to Quetzaltenango via four chicken buses. Highlight of the trip was seeing a local man lugging half a skinned cow on his back with his friend bringing up the rear - literally.
