After a brief stopover in Samoa and a two hour transfer with a crazy minibus driver from Fiji's airport (those from Zim and SA will know what we are talking about), we arrived at our paradise home for the next five days. The Wellesley Resort (http://wellesleyresort.com.fj/the-resort/) on Fiji’s coral coast. The resort sells itself as a boutique hotel only catering for 15 rooms, a little rustic but perfect.  The resort doesn’t have the activities that a big hotel chain would have but if snorkelling along a private beach and lying in the sun is all you need – then this is the place to be.  What about the local language?  The only words you need to know in Fiji are Bula – hi and Vinaka – thanks.

Playing the honeymoon card again we managed to get the best room in the resort – could anything go wrong in this paradise (hold that thought!!!).  Our days were spent sunning ourselves on the beach, snorkelling, kayaking, eating three course meals and simply relaxing.

While were there we met an awesome couple called Sean and Erin (from Australia).  On one of the days we decided to go deep sea fishing.  Our skipper was called Sabille – he didn’t look like a Fijian but assured us that his family had been in Fiji for six generations.  The fishing was Fijian-style – no rods just hand reels.  After four hours at sea the tally was: Sabille – 6 fish, Sean 1 fish and Ivor – 1 BIG piece of coral!!!  Seeing that Ivor wasn’t the fisherman of the day he decided to go snorkelling with Sean while the girls continued to fish.

After fishing Sabille invited us to a nearby village to meet the Chief and partake in a drink of Kava in the village hall.  Kava is the powdered root of a pepper bush that is mixed with water and then consumed.  It tastes like muddy water at the side of a road after a heavy downpour.  After drinking it, your tongue goes numb for a while and you feel very relaxed and sleepy.  According to Sabille, too much Kava results in you feeling 'drunk but in control’ – sounded good to us.

The hall was filled with only men, Kate and Erin.  When we asked where all the woman were, one of the guys replied – workingJ.

After drinking Kava for about an hour we set off back to the resort where Kate was treated to an hour massage (for only 12 – bargain!).  Kate decided that she wasn’t hungry so Ivor went to join Sean and Erin where the kitchen had cooked the catch of the day (luckily Ivor wasn’t eating Coral).  After dinner Ivor went back to the room...... remember that question –what could go wrong?  What all of us had neglected to notice was that the Kava was mixed with local water, which we had been warned not to drink.  For the next 24 hours Kate, myself and Sean became the victims of a violent stomach bug.  For any of you that have watched that toilet scene from the movie, Dumber and Dumber, that scene was mild by comparison.  Fortunately the bug passed but we had to forfeit a day on the beach and some of our all inclusive food.

Fiji was a great stop for us and we would definitely like to head back there at some point to visit the other islands.  Not only is the country beautiful, but the people are welcoming, generous and kind.  We probably won’t be drinking the Kava again though, unless we need to lose some weight.

The next stop is New Zealand where it has been snowing and raining. Our swimwear has been packed away and the thermals are at the top of our rucksacks ready and waiting.

Good job you have this blog otherwise how could you remember such a wonderful trip!
Kate, I am sure your Mum and Nancy are having an equally impressive time in Sidmouth whilst I pack my cardigan to go to a wedding reception!
Clearly the big women of Fiji do not drink Kava whilst the man use it as a diet aid!
Keep having fun...........x

That's really too bad about the kava experience. The comparison of your situation to the Dumb and Dumber movie was just too funny. :)
