Copacabana sits on the shore of lake Titicaca at 12, 500 feet, and there is one immediately noticeable thing about this town. Hippies. There are more hippies here than Khousan road in Thailand. They patrol the streets selling jewelery or just promoting their cafes. They are super friendly (sometimes they make you dance) but why they are here, I have not yet been able to determine. Perhaps it is the proximity to the Isle del Sol.
We booked an afternoon tour to visit "Isle del Sol" in the middle of the lake
Next to the island of the sun is the island of the moon. This island played home to the "chosen ones," the Inca girls destined for sacrifice. We have gone from Machu Picchu where our guide claimed there were no human sacrifices, to visiting the frozen ice princess who was definitely sacrificed with a blow to the head, to Isle del Luna where our guide explained the sacrifice process in graphic detail, something more attune to what the movie Apocalypto showed. Who knows what is really true?
The boat ride to and from the island was a relaxing afternoon. The lake is beautiful and seems largely untouched by the presence of man. We are excited about getting to La Paz though and experiencing South America beyond our Adean adventures.
