Jen and I (along with Mark his friend Scott) headed off to Hawaii way back in December of 1997. We went around a few of the islands I rode down a (dormant of course) volcano on a bicycle. A bus took us up at some ungodly hour and it was freezing cold at the top! As always I was unprepared for anything but sunshine and my flip flops and skirt just didn't cut it. I huddled under a bright yellow raincoat for warmth, the beautiful sunrise made it all worth it though. On the ride down I was given a kids stack hat (bike helmet), which was amusingly over brightly coloured, looked great with my bright yellow raincoat. I looked great.

We also did a bit of scuba diving off one of the Islands, my first time and all the little fishies were pretty and seemed very used to tourists staring oddly at them. We also went to a beach that hadn't been filled with Australian sand and it was just pebbly black rocks.

For my birthday we went to a Hard Rock Cafe (hey come on I was young) I turned 21 and almost got my ID refused because it was strange and Australian. Jens birthday was a few days after mine so she was "underage" the whole time, a couple of young local lads kept sneaking us into bars, (hoping, no doubt, for drunk tourist girls).

On one of the islands Jen had booked Marks friend Scott and I into a "twin room" and on entering the room it had a double bed. By this stage Scott was annoying both Jen and I and as there was no couch there was no way I was considering sharing a bed with this annoying lad. So I went down to reception and complained. The lady on reception seemed to think that twin can mean anything and that's the risk you take. Hmm. I started getting really annoyed and upset and the manager came out. I complained again to him, and started throwing in my best I'm a girl and this is not a good situation, what would my father say?? type antics. Either he took pity on me or just wanted me to shut up, they asked us to go for a walk and come back and they would see what they could do. On return our luggage had been moved to another room, an upgrade!! Our new room not only had two beds, but a lounge room as well. Flash! The one and only time I ever complained myself into an upgrade. We did a few of the standard touristy things, as you must, went to a Luau and drank our rather dodgy but "free" (well included in the price) Mai Tai.
