Not long after arriving in Vancouver Tracey and I headed over to Victoria for a long weekend. Being semi fresh arrived from the its free, or almost free - UK we were still in a state of shock at how expensive all tourist attractions seemed and so we were quite cautious about what we visited. I had to laugh this weekend as we popped into some attractions that seemed outrageously pricey last time, and paid $5.

Winter in Victoria seemed to mean half the town was closed and there weren't too many others around. A very different feel to the summertime flower basket tourist touting visit of last time!

One of the main attractions advertised is Miniature World, and at $12 a visit we had decided not to go last time, despite my dreams of stomping around mini worlds and proclaiming "I am a giant". Unfortunately the advertised pictures of people doing just this don't show that every model is behind glass.. i had to content myself with peeking in and proclaiming my giantess status but it just wasn't the same. Another disappointment was Undersea Gardens. Fortunately we had a discount for this as it was grimy and dark and not the pretty splashes of colour advertised. The highlight for everyone in there I am sure was my constant singing of "under the sea" as it is located under the harbour.. just like miniature world its glassed in and just like a giant dirty fish tank. We did meet the oddest creature, the sea star. These freaky little things look like an octopus made of couch material and can have up to 40 arms! Worth my discount $5 entry.

We had a great run around the maritime museum and playing pirates.. it is also located in an old court room so we managed to play both sides of the law. We also headed to the art gallery, BC museum and Craigdarough Castle.. which is just like a big old house and not particularly castleish. This time I actually went inside and climbed the stairs to the top.. after that we headed off to the pub for a well earned beer.

At a cute old Irish pub we decided to do a beer taster set called "Tastes of the Island" with a few local beers to try. When they came up with a taste set that included Guinness we wondered what was going on. It took some explaining to the waitress that we wanted Island and not Ireland.. I think we ended up having to point in the end.. and both of us think we don't have strong accents!
