Chilemate 3

Bananas are fascinating. They are the world's tallest herb. 50 leaves grow, wrapped counterclockwise around each other from the base of tithe plant, and the next growth turns into the flower and root. These tall pLants grow in 9 months, and the vegetation does after the fruit ripens. The root, which he described as onion-like, will send up more shoots, which go through the same process.
Our guide had a way with his knife, using it to chop stalks of plants and showing how, as a kid, he and his friens would hold a stalk in front of their bodies and use the knife to simultaneously cut and flick chunks a good distance, sometimes aiming for wasp nests.
One of the reasons to take a night hike is that many animals only come out when it is dark - they even avoid movement when the moon is out, so hunters would carefully track the moonrise to choose which nights to hunt. The fireflies are cool, and our guide caught a glowing click bug. It would move in your grip, clicking between it's head and thorax, moving a bit. It really seemed to take a shine to me, flying back to land on my shirt when it was let go.  We were hoping to see red eyed tree frogs, but the stream was dry and we didn't spot any. We did see a tarantula in the trunk of a large tree and heard of the parasitic wasp that lays an egg in the belly of the spider, which hatches inside and eats as it grows within the paralyzed victim, avoiding vital organs until last. I'm not fond of tarantulas (although I was brave, only shuddering)' but, what a gruesome way to go!

That hike sounds fabulous. ! celosa ! (the green-eyed monster is less ugly in spanish).

I'll never forget the first banana tree I saw. Think I actually gasped after decades of seeing the fruit in grocery stores, and suddenly there it is, GROWING! In a place as beautiful as heaven could ever be. And the flower! How cool is that!
