Today was another wonderful day in our homeland. We started out early at 8 am, though most of us were up well before because of jet lag. We drove an hour up the mountains to the mystical city of Tzfat. It was here in the 17th century that Sephardic Jews fleeing their expulsion from Spain and Portugal settled. They brought with their mystical and spiritual approach to Judaism and prayer through the study of Kabbalah and the Zohar. We went to the blue synagogue of Joseph Caro who wrote the Shulchan Aruch (the famous code of Jewish law). We contemplated the beautiful Kabbalat Shabbat prayers created here. After visiting the Kabbalah centre we were off to the artist colony where it seemed everyone was enthusiastically buying judaica art, jewlery, paintings, tallitot, kippot, candles and more...all original and all stunning.
After lunch we boarded the bus for Metullah, a city on Israel's northern border with Lebanon. As you can see in the picture below we stopped at the Canada centre, created by our Jewish community in the 1980's and kept up with annual donations. This year they redid a full size hockey ice rink just in time for the Maccabiah games in later July. Some even stopped in the shooting range to try their hand safely with pistols.
Finally we drove up to the top of the Golan Heights to see the spot of the most important battle of the1973 Yom Kippur war. After viewing the short film Oz77 we saw the location of the tank battle where 44 Israeli tanks withstood the surprise Syrian assault with over 500 tanks. With bravery and courage the fighters halted the attack and held our northern border.
We arrived back at the hotel at 6:30 in time for dinner and a relaxing night in Tiberius.
Now we need our sleep for more touring and rafting down the Jordan River tomorrow.

Erev Tov,

Rabbi Wise
