This volcano is a dormant volcano situated right next to the heavily active volcano, Popo. Now, one is not allowed to climb Popo because of this, so we climbed the other one. I wasn't going to pretend that I wasn't scared because of the sheer height, the coldness and the fact that the volcano's dormant i.e. not extinct! But the view from up above are absolutely breathtaking (as the pictures describe).
We started our journey at the butt crack of dawn from D.F. Still quite sleepy and needing the toilet, we arrived into the town of Amecameca, a sleepy little town that lies in the valley of the volcanoes. From here all 16 of us got in a van and rambled up on the volcano
Now the climb was quite hard and I was part of the old lady crew at the back of the crowd. I felt a little underdressed in my trainers and skinny hoodie (hey fashion counts!) cos there were other people with huge rucksacks, massive gear on, ear muffs, gloves, pick axes, and hiking poles! I was like 'hmm maybe i should have worn another jumper!' So my friend Liliana lent me her parka (i looked like kenny from south park or the little asian one in East Is East) and I was good to go!
We eventually reached somewhat the summit, you could go on forever but it was getting dark and cold so after a rest at the top, we proceeded to descend which was actually harder than climbing as my friend Lily so gracefully demonstrated (she managed to land flat on her face after diving into a kamakazi style catapult). I was in hysterics for a while which made the walk down somewhat fun!
Well, a pair of very dirty jeans, cold ears and a bumpy bus ride later, we arrived home and absolutely pooped...so as you do, i went clubbing that night!
