After a morning of sorting out show tickets and Grand Canyon Helicopter rides, we decided to take the rest of the day and head out to a little town 3 hours away in the Desert called Rachel. This town is the closest to Dream land or Area 51 as it is commonly known.

It was a nice drive although as we became more isolated the temperature plummeted to just above freezing. There is no fuel out there so we topped up along the way.

Area 51 Groom Lake is surrounded on all sides by mountain ranges , I suppose that's why they chose that spot as it is well protected by prying eyes. In its hay day in the 60's this place was known for its top secret research and development. It was here that the U2 spy plane and the Oxcart projects came to life, alongside this spot they tested over 100 nuclear bombs and I would say a lot of the place is still radioactive from the fallout.

As we came thought the mountain range we ran into our first ice on the ground so we stopped just the experience our first snow.

Once through the hills it opened up into a large flat plain, not long after that between markers 29 and 30 we found the famous Black Mailbox (it is now White). This letter box was thought by UFO chasers to be the mailbox of the CIA who worked at Groom Lake and was often raided by people, the guy that owns it is a rancher that became so pissed off that he changed the color and made it like a safe to stop them. While we were there a strange dark pickup truck pulled up with markings on the side, it said wildlife game patrol and was driven by a guy wearing a uniform with sheriffs badge on his arm. A bit odd I thought and tried to photograph him without being to obvious.

Another 30 ks of vast nothing and we arrived at a siding known at Rachel population 5. They owners of the truck stop renamed it Lil Ali Inn to cash in on the tourists to Area 51, it was also used in the movie Paul. We went in had a Coke and bought some trinkets.

It was then we headed on the long road home. Jodie drove both our and back and enjoyed her first drive in the US. It became dark at 4:30 and we ended coming over the hill into the lights of Vegas around 6pm which was pretty amazing to see.

The staff fly put to Groom Lake on special aircraft called Janet, the is the only call sign they use and do not put in a flight plan. On the way back from the Grand Canyon we were lucky enough to get a photo.

I enjoyed the day, for me it has been on the bucket list for sometime, it's not everybody's cup of tea but I have read a lot about this subject and although I personally don't believe the US government has hidden alien bodies or spacecraft out there that is what a lot of other think. I do know that some secret projects were worked on there an the stealth aircraft that dropped bombs on Iraq plus the U2 that Francis Gary Powers was shot down in came from this facility. What ever you believe it was great to experience this part in our history.
