Tuesday, 6/22 Today we walked into the city of Maastricht, about a 20 minute walk.  The small front gardens of the houses are full of flowers, most are familiar varieties that we also find in WA & OR.  Every so often we would see a miniature knotted garden, where boxwoods are planted and trimmed in carefully laid out designs.  The famous conductor, Andre Rieu, lives and owns several houses on Frans and Martine's street.   A few years ago when Mr. Rieu was re-landscaping the hillside beside his house, Frans’ mother began shouting at him, because he was planting the hillside full of rhododendrons and they are not a native plant. He went to school with Frans so he was just a neighborhood boy to her.

Wednesday, 6/23 – Today Frans gave Iris and Linda lessons on how to operate their car.  It uses propane and gasoline.  Their generosity is beyond words!  The car we are driving is a very nice Subaru Forester.  We’ll take good care of it.  In the afternoon Iris drove us out to Grijzegrubben, a village where she lived when she worked near the Maastricht airport.  It is very rural with rolling hills checkered with crops, sheep and cows.  Linda recognized potatoes in bloom, spinach, hops, and corn.  The corn grown in Europe is only used for animal feed.  It is not the same as the sweet corn we have in the US.  We stopped in a village called Valkenburg and had something to eat and drink and then came back to Maastricht.  The GPS is working well and we’re glad because the areas around the villages have grown over the last few years.

We have reorganized our luggage, leaving much of it in the garage here (as opposed to the middle of the sitting room where the project has been underway) until we return from Germany. We have caught up our laundry, the car is fueled and we head off tomorrow for Cologne to visit Linda’s friend Inge.

Linda & Iris: I'm loving your travel blog. Makes me wish I was there with you. Linda, I need to get to know Iris when we all return to the Desert. She sounds like my kind-a gal!! Safe travels - I'll be looking forward to more news along the way.
