Arrived in Sofia late morning on a public bus from Veliko Tarnovo. A much prettier city than Bucharest. Wandered around the city taking in the sights for a couple of hours stopping at random market stalls for panitsa (the Bulgarian version of a bourek) with spinach and cheese, then some freshly squeezed orange juice and lastly some coconut ice cream. It's only 31 degrees here but it feels much hotter than that! On the upside, my Cyrillic reading is getting a little better, although it is a bit depressing when - like a 5 year old - you've successfully sounded out a word only to realize that it is a Bulgarian word and you have no idea what it means :)
Dinner was at a restaurant close to the hotel - with the biggest shashlik I have ever seen. Dessert was Turkish delight wrapped in pastry and drowned in rose sugar syrup - I think I have had my sugar intake for the whole year in one day.
