Dear all,

Hello from bella, bella Firenze (or beautiful, beautiful Florence). We are having a lovely time, although Eleanor has just called me a freak of nature (What a trollop!). I get to defend myself actually- he is so its justified! Arrg now I control the keyboard victory! Only joking, we're not really wrestling in an internet cafe (or are we?). Anyway, Florence is quite beautiful. Although it doesn't have the picturesque Itallian architecture of Verona, but the beauty in Florence really lies within the buildings, which is lucky as we have had horrible drizzle for the first time this afternoon. We've been veritable culture vultures, and today spent 5 yes 5 hours in the Uffuzi gallery, which in itself is an endurance trial, although much of the work, particularly by Botaccelli, is even more beautiful in person than in the pictures you always see. The Uffuzi also had a really interesting exhibition on Da Vinci which we both enjoyed, despite being tired and more than a little bit hungry. This afternoon we saw the Duomo, which is particularly astounding from the outside, and the church of San Croce where many famous Florentines have been interred, including Michaelangelo, Gallileo and Machiavelli. We're having a lot of fun, and are hoping to see the famous David tomorrow - the only downer (other than the rain) is knowing we can't see it all. I'd just like to wish happy birthday to my Dad for Saturday and my Grandma for Sunday (Richard) and hope they're watching and following in trepidation. And to the rest of you, feel free to post your opinions to us. It would be really great to know how you're all getting on and to hear from you about your opinions of our adventures. Love to you all,

Richard and Eleanor

Greetings from Redcar
It's great to have contact with you during your holiday exploration and to hear where you are and what you have seen during your travels; especially since we have missed our usual 'Sunday chats'- don't know what we'll do when you go to university!
You have been to some wonderful places - we spent just one full day in Venice and found it enthralling - so different to anywhere else - but we have not been to Italy generally.
Thank you for your birthday greetings - nice that you remembered. We look forward to further instalments of your epic journey. Meanwhile take care and enjoy Rome.
Love from Grandma and Grandad
