Day 341 - 344:
Thursday - the day after. Tired. We got up, checked-out and were on our way to Cayambe to visit friends of Kory where we also want to spend Christmas. Carlos joined us as well. Cayambe is 1.5 hours north of Quito, a typical town in the Sierra. It's almost at 3,000 metres. We arrived late, by 6pm. La senora was cooking us some soup and we stayed up chatting away...
Friday - time to explore Cayambe! Another Carlos, Kory's friend whom we visited, was the guide. Just when we stepped out of the house we had a superclear view of the Cayambe, the snow-capped mountain. Stunning! We walked throught the streets of Cayambe which turned out to be much bigger than I expected. It's almost a little town! The atmosphere here is very different from Shell. And that's the beauty of Ecudor. There are 3 very different and distinctive regions: the Costa, the Sierra (Andes) and the Oriente (rainforest). In they are all within a 8 hour ride. Amazing! So the Sierra is the part that does remind me a bit of Bolivia. The clothes of the people, the weather, the surrounding. It's just beautiful! We spent the morning walking, then headed back for lunch and a nap before we were off to meet some more people and had a game of basketball. I was the cheerleader but had a private session with Kory afterwards, to also be able to play but without much danger that I get hurt in any way....
Saturday we headed to Otavalo, which is a 40 minutes drive by bus from Cayambe. Carlos from Sweden was never there, so Saturday was the right day to visit because it's the grand market day. It started to rain by lunch time, a bit unfortunate, but we all got to see what we wanted. And we bought a little jacket for our little one - maybe a bit big, might have to wait a year or 2 till it fits. But the cardigan for me fits - even with belly! Love it! We got back to Cayambe late afternoon. It was raining here as well, best weather to watch some movies! La senora prepared 4 chickens that we bought in the morning for Christmas dinner. With rice and vegetables....yummy. Christmas was quite unspectacular. The family didn't have money for any gifts this year, so there was just the dinner. And we were too tired to make it to the mass at midnight. Next morning we had a good sleep in, but I woke up with a little cold. Felt it the night before and had some hot water with lemon, since I shouldn't take any medicin. Didn't help much, my noise is running....Carlos from Sweden left us early morning the get back to Shell. We stayed another day, as we'll be returning to Quito afterwards. So we made it down to the plaza where hundres of people were walking in the streets! Very busy! It was a beautiful day, didn't feel like Christmas, the sun was out and I could walk in short sleeves. Looking forward to Christmas in Austria again, but with snow please!
