Buenos Dias

We've made it to Mexico on a very early morning 5 hour flight to Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico. The aerial views from the plane were surreal as we flew in over the impossibly blue water of the Carribean Sea.

Instant LOVE for these people. We're here mainly to visit the archaeological sites and temples of Chichen Itza, Ek Balam and Coba, to explore Mayan villages and investigate the 2012 predictions and to laze around on the Carribean Beaches at Tulum. Cancun is filled with Americans on packaged holidays riding on parasailing equipment and jet skis. We headed straight downtown el centro to where the lights are much brighter and where the locals meet to party. We were exhausted but the lure of an active nitelife took us out again to explore.

We kicked back at a simple traditional Yucatan restaurant called La Tadita munching on spicy chicken soup and chicken tacos with lettuce and radish. I got on the fish bowl sized frozen margaritas, and guaranteed hangover from hell 100% agave tequila shots and Nadine drank Sol beer. When in Mexico.... before hitting up a local pub where there was a band playing with two guys dressed in AC/DC t-shirts beltīng out trashy Seattle rock cover songs.

We've renounced everthing in our lives in Australia and it's all sinking in, we're finally on the road and we'll be living out of  a backpack for the next couple of years. Freedom.We were up for a night on the town. We followed the lead of the hipsters and trendites who all go out at around 12:30am. Alot of handsome gay bois and grrls were all dressed up and heading out downtown so did a pied piper and went to Disco Karamba which was a gay boi gangster bar. We smoked and chilled out with gangs of Mexican cowboys with names like Paco and Santiago. The club was glamourous and dark with large erotic artworks, plush lounges, chandeliers, podiums and lasers with big screens showing American film clips. We cabbed it to Picante Club, a little bar where the dance floor was jumping with gyrating men dancing to Mexican techno. Next we hit up The Sky Box where the pstrance tracks were pumping. This place was superb. It was up some mystreious looking stairs and through a door that opened up onto a rooftop bar high above the city. There was a live DJ working hard on top of a tower up in the sky hence the name and everybody was dancing and moving, a throng of people in unison. There was a spa bath too and a huge screen with coloured visuals. We drank Mexican beer Majito? not the cocktail and got into the trashy Cancun vibe..... horrendous but good for a laugh.

We went to a street stall and ate a late night munchies snack of  mexican chorizo and chicken tacos, safe enough cause they were well cooked and all the locals are eating them. While we were talking to the street stall owner in broken English a car load of police got out of their van waving their machine guns around and came over to sit with us and eat tacos. The woman at the desk of the hotel was up all nite and let us in and out a few times, naughty Mexican party animals we were. We should be hitting up the Latin American Spanish phrasebook soon and cramming in the lessons because we barely know how to order food and rent rooms. Tomorrow will be estar crudo  (hungover). Not  too many images for this chapter... too drunk to function a camera

We go inland to Merida tomorrow.
