We sailed all night, and this time the 2 of us moved our matresses up to the front of the boat, where we could enjoy the stars, fresh air and slightly less noise from the engine! We woke up to a beautiful sunrise, had banana pancakes for breakfast and got to Laba Island. Here we had a very steep trek to the top for some breathtaking views of the surrounding islands and bays.

1 hour away, we spent some time at Red Beach, actually more pink than red, coloured by the plentiful red corals. Again, beautiful snorkelling... 15 mins from there was Komodo Island, obviously the highlight of the trip - and for some a childhood dream, having seen David Attenborough here back in the day... Our guide spoke the most broken English we have heard so far, but it worked out ok. We spotted a “baby dragon”, about 3 months old (probably about 30 cm long), trying to kill a gekko almost its own size! There were some deer and wild pigs around too. As we headed back to the boats, a huge komodo was waiting about halfway down the jetty, looking at the boats (where 3 chickens - our dinner - had been slaughtered a couple of hours earlier). As it turned, 28 tourists started to run!

We sailed just around the corner, passing Komodo village, to a small bay where we would spend the night - finally a night without the engine running! The crew kept talking about “small party”, and this entailed listening to extremely cheasy dance music, Ace of Base and, of course, a bit of UB40 once in a while, as we waited for our chickens to cook. At least our were still coldish... A flock of huge bats, flying foxes, left a cave on the island and flew overhead as the sun set.
