Tuesday we flew from Yogyakarta to Mataram on Lombok. From there we took a taxi to the ferry to the Gili Islands. We almost got scammed at a fake ticket office up the road from the ferry, but made it down to the right one! We came at a good time - 22 people were waiting, we were number 23 and 24, so when one more bought a ticket we set off. It was a 40 minute ride to Gili Trawangan, the farthest of the 3 small islands off the coast of Lombok. We left our bags at a cafe and went looking for a place to stay, and after a couple of hours we found a cheap bungalow.

There is one road around the island, about 30 m from the water, and it takes about 1½ hours to walk around the island. The main strip is on the east coast, where almost all of the bars, restaurants and places to stay are.

We have snorkelled a few times and otherwise just lazed around. Yesterday Nick turned 30! We rented a couple of bikes (that, apart from horse-drawn buggies are the only mode of transport here) and rode around the island. We had a great lunch on the northern tip of the island, found a lookout point and had a sundowner on the west side. In the evening we splurged on a 3-course dinner - and wine!

The day after, less hung over than expected, we signed up for a PADI Open Water Diving course with Gili Divers, a company we can warmly recommend. After an introduction in the pool, reading the theory book and watching videos the first day, we spent the next day doing 2 dives at 12 metres (at Hans' Reef and Halik, where there was an uncomfortable current), and more pool training. The following day we were to have 2 dives at 18 metres (Shark's Point and Bounty Wreck, an abandoned jetty)! We had to end the last (18m) dive as Nick's sinuses were blocked and he couldn't equalize as we were descending. The dive centre was cool, let us do the last dive the following day at the same site, Bounty Wreck. Wow, what an amazing experience... Especially our last dive, where we were comfortable and could put into practice the skills we had learnt!
