After another very bumpy minibus ride away from the coast, we took the train to Yogyakarta, Central Java: Bisnis class. On this 4 hour trip the only difference from the economy train was a few fans in the ceiling, no sales people and a ticket that cost 6 times as much - then again, the first train had only cost $2!

We arrived late afternoon and rented a scooter in the evening so we would be able to head up to the Buddhist temples at Borobudur, 50 km away, on our own instead of on a bus tour. Got up at 3.30 and had breakfast consisting of small, sweet bananas and redbull! We were there just over 1½ hours later with a compulsory “detour” on the way, but luckily we had GPS and an Indonesian sim card on the phone. It was all worth it! What an amazing sight! And the Merapi volcano in the background letting off steam; it's an active volcano that last erupted in October last year.

We spent the rest of the day walking around Yogya, a small city, capital of the production of batik clothes and paintings, so this dominates the street picture along with becaks and horse-drawn buggies; the main attraction here is the Sultans palace and grounds, the Kraton, home to about 25.000 people.

We’re flying to Lombok tomorrow and catching a ferry to Gili Trawangan; looking forward to some more beach time now!
