The Bannur countryside and Srirangapatnam
Bannur countryside
From Somnathpura, we took the beautiful country route going from Bannur to Srirangapatnam. The tranquil road skirts a pristine lake with resident ducks, lush green fields, orchards and colourful rural houses. Ruined remnants of Tipu Sultan era buildings dot the countryside. It is picture postcard perfect! If Home Stays were available along this route, one could spend a delightful length of time here. There is something very pleasant and welcoming about this area, with so much potential for rural tourism and its attendant economic benefits to the local population.
Srirangapatnam [Seringapatnam] was our lunch halt. The unpretentious Vaibhav Bhavan on the highway served up a delicious masala dosa. A quick visit followed to see the remnants of Tipu Sultans Fort, the pretty white mosque, the Gumbaz, the well laid out Dariya Daulat palace, and the Kaveri confluence or "sangam". The filth and litter at the river banks mar the beauty of this otherwise scenic spot. Why do our people not have any civic sense? Coracle rides on the river are on offer here at negotiable rates. KSTDC's Hotel Mayura is located on the river banks further upstream, which is presumably cleaner.
