It seems I read some bogus news about the 1 million cars being taken off the road for 14 days starting Aug. 7.  Chinese official news is now reporting that the test won't begin until Aug. 17 and will only last 4 days.  (It seems somebody got their 1's mixed up.)  Even still, there seem to be less cars on the road now, but it's hard to say for sure.  Also, the air is not as clear as it was yesterday.  So, in other words, I don't know if 1 million cars have been taken off the road or not.  Yesterday was a very clear day, but it could have just been coincidence.  Today is a little more hazy than yesterday, but not as bad as usual.  If any of you hear reports on this from the outside, please comment.  Also, I had a hard time logging in today, so there is a chance that someone is reading this and not liking what they see.  If my pod gets suddenly shut down, you'll know why. I'll keep posting as long as I can. ~YinYin

Olympics preparations
Forbes mag. had an interesting perspective on the million cars and factories being shutdown... I think the unusually clear day was a coincidence or is it auspicity? It was actually the first day of the pre-olympics cermony, maybe heaven was pleased. I heard at the cermony in Tiananmen the band performed the olympic theme song 'Women Junbei hao.' So I believe hide your car day will go as planned on the 17th. Supposedly Chery car company, that's Chery, will sell 1 million cars to China in '09.

08/08/07 Had to Be a Nice Day
Shari,

Good thoughts about it being clear on 08/08, the day of the One-Year-To-Go-Till-The-Olympics Ceremony. Rumor on the streets in China has it that they sometimes seed clouds before big events so that it rains beforehand and clears the air. There was a downpour on 08/07, so this could be what had happened.

For those who don't speak Mandarin, the song that Shari mentioned, 'Women Zhunbei Hao,' means, 'We are ready,' and they have definitely been singing it for a while now. I think it's a little early for that song, but 'We are almost ready,' just doesn't have the same ring, does it? ;-)
