Oct 3, Safari in South Luangwa National Park
The road to get to the park from Chipata is only 135kms but it took us 3 ½ hours…it is so bad… except for the first part which is paved…the rest is in construction and the deviation is a total washboard.
The campsite we found was really nice, looking over the Luangwa river… with hamacs, palapas and even a small pool…that looked more like soup to me, the area gets so hot at this time of year in particular.
We slept at the sounds of hippos and elephants in the background… one night, the lions joined the chorus…it was very nice (once they turned off the TV -and its sports games- that played most of the day it seemed!!)
The park did not get as much excitement from us as Mara reserve in Kenya, but all in all, we managed to see quite a lot of animals and the views over the river were grand. Lance loved the forests, Fab got to drive for a little while and we took a lot of photos again! The kids even managed to ride on the truck's top before we were told it was forbidden.
As for the elephants eating our food, I felt such shame being not only a science teacher but also over 50…as I know that eating that kind of food is not only bad, but also a bad habit for them…. yet, I would agree…the next night I felt ready for them as we had hidden everything the way we were supposed to do it and I felt cheated that they did not come back. It turns out that the owners asked their guards to make sure the elephants would go somewhere else… and not into our camping! Corinne

La route pour se rendre de Chipata au parc est seulement de 135kms, mais il nous a fallu 3 heures et demie pour la faire ... elle est si mauvaise ... sauf pour la première partie qui est pavée ... le reste est en construction et la déviation, une vraie tôle ondulée.
Le camping était très agréable, donnant sur la rivière Luangwa ... avec hamacs, palapas et même une petite piscine ... qui ressemblait plus à de la soupe pour moi, l’endroit est si chaud à cette époque de l'année.
Nous avons dormi au son des hippopotames et des éléphants... une nuit, les lions se sont joints au chœur ... c'était très agréable (une fois qu'ils ont éteint la télé -et ses sports- qui a joué la plupart du temps il me semblait!)
Le parc n'a pas reçu autant d'excitation de notre part qu’au Mara au Kenya, mais dans l'ensemble, nous avons réussi à voir beaucoup d'animaux et la vue sur la rivière a été grandiose. Lance a aimé les forêts, Fab a pu conduire pendant un petit moment et nous avons pris encore beaucoup de photos! Les enfants ont même réussi à monter sur le dessus du camion, avant qu’on nous dise que c’était interdit.
A propos des éléphants qui mangeaient notre nourriture, j'ai ressenti une telle honte d'être non seulement un professeur de sciences, mais aussi avoir plus de 50 ans ... je sais que manger ce genre de nourriture n'est pas seulement mauvais, mais c’est aussi une mauvaise habitude pour eux .... Pourtant, je serais d'accord ... la nuit suivante, je me sentais prête pour eux car nous avions caché tout ce que nous étions censés faire et je me suis sentis déçue qu'ils ne soient pas revenus. Il s'avère que les propriétaires ont demandé à leurs gardes de s'assurer que les éléphants aillent ailleurs ... et pas dans notre camping! Corinne
