6 months ago, on New Year's eve, we sat down, the 6 of us, and each told the others what our expectations and fears were about this year off together. Here is the summary:
Fabyan (16):
I want to see the world to learn and see new and old things, have some opportunities and some time off. The world won't be the same for very long; I want to see things that will not be there in 20 years...that I will be able to tell my kids and grand kids that I lived in the times of sharks!!
Memories are one of the things that are the most important for me. When I look back into my past, I see the things that were most important to me. Either it was an ordinary day that I remember being with my family or friends, or remembering riding an elephant or jumping in cold water.
Places I want to go to: tell you guys the truth: I want to go everywhere, even to places I have already been or unknown places. I am constantly undecided about everything.
Australia always seemed very cool to my eyes. I remember that I thought I was going to see kangaroos in Zimbabwe (I didn’t).
I want to buy cool stuff, get ripped, learn (but no school), see and discover new things, be with family, do sky diving, throw a freesbe on the Machu Pichu Mountains, go on an elephant and a camel, pet a kangaroo, see cheetahs, ocean beaches, volcanoes, camping, hiking.
Roman (20):
Goals:
-Spend time with my family
-Be Happy & Satisfied
-Write a Film
-Learn a musical instrument
-Find some quality time with the F-Bomb (Fabyan)!
Expectations:
-Be able to find the time to accomplish my goals and the things I don’t have the time to do (write, learn an instrument)
-I expect that we will have many fun and wondrous times, though I know that we will definitely have some arguments on the way.
-I expect each of us –including me- to make some sacrifices… TO THE GODS!
Fears:
-I fear that it won’t be like it was 10 years ago…
-What will it be like without a trailer?
-I’m afraid we might have a greater struggle getting along, now that there are 6 prominent opinions in the family!
-I’m afraid of falling behind –i.e. not meeting my goals.
-I hope I won’t feel trapped or frustrated with x or z.
-The Fear of regretting.
Bucket List:
-Live an incredible experience, surviving one wonderful year with the 5 of you!
Tristan (23):
Needs:
-our own vehicle
-visit New Zealand, Australia
-learn a water sport in warm water (wind/surf/kite)
-when we get to a nice spot, stay a while
-days when we do nothing
-learn to play something
-climb a mountain
-scuba dive
Worry:
-not having a car
-bug nets
-flying licenses
-job
-don’t like family disputes, may need solo times sometimes
-language for Peggy (need to speak in English when planning)
Expect:
-see the World
-learn, experience
-get along with my girlfriend, which means some solo time
Peggy (24):
Goals (Note: these may change after more thought)
-learn/continue to learn French
-keep a journal for my parents
-scuba dive: overcome fear of being under water
Fears:
-being extremely homesick (although traveling and seeing new things is amazing, after only a short time I find myself dreaming of, and anticipating my bed), our dog Clutch, certain food, talking to my family...etc. In a way, looking forward to being home.
-returning to Kelowna after one year, to "nothing": no home, no job, no money, and possibly a dog who no longer loves me!
-leaving my family for one year
Expectations:
-me time: being a very independent person, time to myself is important
-not feeling rushed through days: since we do have a year, it would be nice to just have days with no plans! Go with the flow days.
Bucket list:
-Would love to see New Zealand
Lance (50):
Goals:
-see new places
-experience different cultures
Expectations:
-get photos that can be published, may lead to something after returning from teaching
-be able to converse in Swahili
Fear:
-if the first big trip brought us together and created a special bond, I’m worried that this one may pull us apart. It will be a chance to work on communication skills.
Bucket list:
-Swim on tropical beach lined with pine trees (New Caledonia)
-See sunset on the Skeleton Coast (Namibia)
-All go diving together off the Coast of Queensland (Australia)
Corinne (51):

-take time
-enjoy life and my family
-travel and see new things
-not get stressed
Expectations:
-we stay together and work things out
-we are careful with money
-Fab has some time to do his homework (and get ready for Gr 12)
-we are committed and don’t pull back at last minute
Fears:
-that we come out worse than when we came in (as a family)
-too many dirty surroundings and not so great times
-to be disappointed
-to run out of money too quickly
Bucket list:
-dive in a real diving paradise
-camp in beautiful surroundings
-canoe in calm lake with beautiful scenery around it
-horse back ride in an African safari park
-stay in a beautiful lodge overlooking a water hole filled with African animals
-hike in beautiful parks
-pique nique near clear rivers, no bugs, no pollution
-laugh and have a good time together
-write anecdotes that others will enjoy reading
-hear lions and all kinds of animals in a tent at night without being in a dangerous spot
-communicate better with each other
-eat well and healthy foods (fruits, tropical fruits, vegetables)
-learn more Spanish
-fell more serene and living more in the present
