What better excuse to extend our break from reality than Mom's 60th birthday? We landed in Cape Town just before midnight on Saturday 18 March. Dad collected us; he'd been strict instructions to keep our arrival secret from Mom, so in the car on the way to Hout Bay he told us about all the devious and subversive little schemes he'd resorted to keep it a surprise.

Mom was asleep when we sneaked into the house; I leaned over her and said Hi. Initially she thought I was my sister (who was visiting too) but when she realised who it was, she leapt out of bed, crying "Oh my God!". She really had no idea we were coming - well done Dad.

Over the next few days in Cape Town, we got to know our adorable new little nephew, Stefan, born on New Years Day, and spent quality time catching up with Mom, Dad and sister Charlene. The glorious late summer's days were windless, sunny and warm - March is just the time to see the Cape at its best. Sunday the 19th saw a crowd of family and old friends gather at the house for a birthday lunch, and on Monday evening - Mom's actual birthday - uncle, aunt and cousins returned for a fish braai and slide-show.

On Thursday we jumped in Dad's 'spare' car and headed up the Garden Route to Mossel Bay, for a visit to grandparents, and continued up the coast to Port Elizabeth.
