Just before there was any danger of getting bored, I thought I'd sign up for some Glacier walking on the last day of my trip here. There are several massive glaciers throughout Iceland and I found a company that took small groups of people up to the nearest one to Rekjavik called Mydrasjokull (which it turns out is a glacier on top of an active volcano!) so I just had to give it a go.
It was my first time walking on ice, but luckily with these nifty crampons and ice axes it wasn't that difficult to climb.
The guide told us that the most difficult aspect of glacier walking is knowing which bits are safe to walk on - so I was happy to let him lead the way!
The weirest thing about walking on the glacier, which is apparently 60 - 70 metres deep of snow, is that you can hear the ice melting, cracking, and even hear water pouring underneath you...
If ever you're in Iceland, this trip is a definite must though.
